World Falconry Day

November 6, 2021 @ 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

The North Carolina Falconers Guild in cooperation with Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center will be celebrating World Falconry Day on Saturday, November 6, 2021 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event will be held at Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center located at 248 Allisons Woods Dr., Statesville, NC.

Falconers from North Carolina and perhaps from surrounding states will attend with their birds and the public is invited to come speak with falconers, view the birds, take photos and ask questions about birds of prey. This is a perfect opportunity to see the birds up close and “personal”.

Although the official date of World Falconry Day is November 16 each year, this year we wanted to start a little early since so many will be attending the national celebration in Oklahoma on that day. November 16 was the date in 2010 that falconry was inscribed as an intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The practice of falconry dates to some 4,000 years ago and many of the techniques and methods are similar to those used millennia ago.

Falconers we would love for you to attend and bring your birds and talk to members of the public about our mutual passion. Any licensed falconer is welcome to come and join us and celebrate World Falconry Day. In order that we can ensure adequate space for all birds attending PLEASE let us know you are coming and how many birds you will have with you. Text the information to Larry Dickerson at 704-880-7553.

An open air, but enclosed weathering area, complete with wardens will be available for you to perch your birds while they are on display. PLEASE follow all common sense rules about the weathering yard. The rules are simple:

  1. All birds must be in weathering at or before 10 a.m. and must be removed at or after 2 p.m.
  2. NO tid bits or feeding in the weathering area.
  3. What the “warden” says goes. The are there to ensure the safety of your birds. If your equipment is not suitable, they will tell you.
  4. NO “dog clips” to tether your bird with. That might be fine at home, but not for this event.
  5. Bring your own perch and your own bath pan. Water for bath pans will be available.
  6. Bring your own leash and swivel.
  7. You may remove your bird from weathering at anytime such as to visit with a member of the public with your bird on your fist.
  8. People are curious and ask a lot of questions, if you are not comfortable talking to people, don’t. refer them to a Guild officer or another falconer.

That’s pretty much about it. Don’t understand something? Ask the warden.

Hunting? Yes there are hunting opportunities. Hunting on site can be available from dawns early light (usually around 7:30 a.m.) until 9:30 a.m. Your bird MUST be down not later than 9:30. Other birds will be out in weathering by that time and we don’t want any accidents, ANY accidents! You may hunt again on the property after 2 p.m. when the event is closed. Members of the public will not be allowed to hunt with you at this time – insurance reasons. Allisons Woods is being kind enough to extend this opportunity, so please don’t abuse it or you mess up one of Larry, Cynthia, Ann and April’s hawking spots. IF you are planning to hunt in the morning YOU MUST contact Larry at least 48 hours in advance so he can meet you and unlock the gate and show where to go. Text or call 704-880-7553.

Food will be available onsite via a food truck if you like otherwise BYOL (bring your own lunch). Ice water will be provided to any falconer or falconer’s family member that requests it.

More questions? Text Larry (Dickerson) at 704-880-7553 or April (Rice) at 704-763-6730. Anne (Steinert) can also answer most of your questions and she can be reached at 704-996-4930. Ann and April know this property very well, but please try Larry first.

The Executive Director at Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center is Selena Goodin. The site property manager is Dennis Goodin. The property belongs to Allison Family Properties Limited. AWOLC will be joining us and will have their live ed birds as well. There may be other non-profits and we hope to have some folks from the NCWRC join us. It is a busy time for everyone, but an invitation has been extended. We will have a donation jar out so people can donate and all those donations will go to support the education birds at AWOLC. Feel free to donate and don’t be shy about mentioning that to members of the public as well.
